Why Parent Education?

Behind every successful athlete is a support system that helps shape not only their performance, but also their confidence, resilience, character, and overall experience in sport. While coaches are responsible for developing athletic skills, parents play a critical role in shaping how athletes respond to success, failure, pressure, adversity, and growth.

Research consistently shows that an athlete's long-term development and enjoyment of sport are heavily influenced by the environment created at home. The way parents communicate after practices and competitions, navigate setbacks, support goals, manage expectations, and interact with coaches can significantly shape an athlete’s experience. These interactions can influence an athlete’s confidence, motivation, mental well-being, and ultimately, their ability to reach their full potential.

As a three-time Olympian and Olympic silver medalist, I experienced the athlete journey from the highest level of sport. I was also raised by two coaches and coached by my mother until I was 14 years old. They challenged me to pursue excellence while reminding me that my self-worth was never defined by my results. Through their guidance, I learned to work hard without fearing failure, take ownership of my athletic journey, and maintain perspective through both success and disappointment.

This program is designed to help parents better understand the athlete experience and provide practical tools for supporting their child's development in a healthy, sustainable way. Topics include parent-athlete communication, navigating the parent-coach relationship, competition support, resilience through setbacks, healthy motivation, mental and emotional well-being, and fostering confidence and independence.

The goal is not simply to help athletes perform better. The goal is to help parents create an environment where young athletes can thrive—developing not only into successful competitors, but into confident, resilient, and well-rounded individuals.

Ultimately, success in sport is about more than results. It is about creating an environment where athletes feel supported enough to take risks, resilient enough to navigate challenges, and confident enough to take ownership of their journey. When parents have the tools to support that process, they can positively shape not only their child’s experience in sport, but the person they become beyond it.
